8th Annual Houston Buddy Walk and Buddy Bash – Saturday, Dec 6th

 

Jones Plaza (600 Louisiana St, Theater District – Approx One mile walk behind Wortham Center, on the bayou trails.  All of it is wheelchair and stroller compatible.

T-SHIRT PICK-UP: SATURDAY, November 22nd, 9am – 2pm!  Before, During, and After the monthly meetings at the Resource Center!  Team Captains – Please plan on turning in all money and picking up all the T-shirts for your team.  NOTE:  If you can’t make it on Saturday, you can come by to pick up your team’s shirts, and turn in your collected money, any day of the following week, Mon-Fri, 8am – 2pm.

Schedule of Events
11am – Registration Opens – Find your team, mingle with others>
12pm -- Opening Ceremony, Awards Presentation, Raffle items drawn
1pm  -- Buddy Walk begins!
2pm – 4pm - Buddy Bash – Family activities, Concession food and drinks, live music!

Concession Stand:  (CASH ONLY) There will be a concession stand with food and beverages for a very reasonable price.  They do not accept credit cards.

DEADLINE 11/22:  Top Fundraising Teams (Top 3):  You must have all registration fees and donations turned in by 11/22 to be eligible for a prize!  Those paid online by credit card are automatically counted.  Team with the Most Walkers (1 team only):  To be eligible for this prize, you must have all walkers registered online, or team member signup sheets faxed to Resource Center (fax 713-996-9290) by 11/22!

PRIZES will also be given for Most Creative and Unique Team Themes, and to the Team with the Most Spirit : )  Each walker will have a raffle ticket in their goody bag, and can win raffle items drawn throughout the day!

MAP and PARKING:  Cost is $7 per car (CASH) in the Bayou Place/Theater District underground parking.  See www.jonesplaza.org to find a map of the underground parking.  The BEST entrances are #4 (Capitol St) and #7 (Texas St), which take you right under Jones Plaza.   Park and Lock lots on the street level are nearby as well (CASH).

Street parking is available, meters run $1.50/hr. (meters take credit cards)

Bring your lawn chairs and/or a blanket and feel free to claim a spot in front of the stage as soon as you get there!  Tables and chairs are available on a first come first serve basis.   NO PETS ALLOWED EXCEPT FOR SERVICE ANIMALS.  Strollers, Wagons welcomed.

About the Buddy Walk

  Come to Jones Plaza and join us in promoting Houston's awareness about Down syndrome. There are over 270 Buddy Walks nationwide in which tens of thousands of people from coast to coast, and across the world, participate each year. The goal of the Buddy Walk is to bring about education, acceptance and awareness of Down syndrome, and to create camaraderie within our own community - making the connection between community and individuals with Down Syndrome. The Buddy Walk vision is to create an environment in which individuals with Down Syndrome are welcomed with fairness, enthusiasm and encouragement.

  • Down syndrome is the most commonly occurring genetic condition with an incidence of 1 in every 733 births.
  • There are currently over 400,000 individuals living with Down syndrome in the United States
  • There are approximately 5000 babies born with Down syndrome each year in the United States.
  • Down syndrome is one of the leading clinical causes of cognitive delay in the world - it is not related to race, nationality, religion or socio-economic status.
  • Recent advances in our understanding of Down syndrome have resulted in dramatic improvements in the life span and the potential of those who are affected.
  • With appropriate support, individuals with Down syndrome can lead fulfilling lives and be contributing members of society
